Chapter Nine

Unpowered Leveling

After a lunch of mushrooms and greens fried in his new skillet with some of the choicest bits of meat from a boar Dare had hunted a couple days ago, it was time to get down to business.

He wanted to level. And since Zuri was close to his level and a Healer maybe she could level with him. The first member of his party?

She might've even done some leveling herself at some point in the past, since she was slightly higher level than the people in Lone Ox who hadn't gotten levels from anything but organically gaining experience from living their lives. Like Ellui.

And it was best to ask her now, so he could see whether she was going to accompany him in hunting monsters or, he supposed, hang around camp while he was gone.

Dare gathered his weapons and traps and checked his armor. “Do you want to go hunt monsters?” he asked Zuri has he slung his mostly empty pack on his shoulders. She stared at him blankly. “Level up?” he tried.

Still nothing. He sighed and tried making the triumphant army noise that sounded when you leveled up.

To his relief comprehension dawned, and she babbled a reply in Goblin. “I'll take that as a yes,” he said. He went into the command screen and found the party invite command he'd noticed in his earlier explorations, inviting Zuri to his party.

To his bafflement, the timid goblin's pale green skin went darker green in a blush and she almost immediately turned down the invitation.

Dare stared at her. “Kill monsters?” he asked again. “Level up?” He drew an arrow and shot it at a nearby tree, then took a stone knife and gently pressed it into her hand, closing her fingers around it. He led her to the tree and had her stab it.

“Hunt monsters?” he repeated again. “Level up?” He made the level up noise.

She nodded, and he smiled in relief and tried inviting her to his party again.

Again she immediately turned him down, looking embarrassed and nervous. As if afraid he'd be angry with her.

Dare sighed and gave up; being grouped would be nice, but she knew this world better than he did and must've had some good reason for refusing the invite. “Hunt monsters,” he said again, retrieving his arrow and motioning for her to follow as he started off into the woods.

Zuri followed without hesitation, walking close at his side as they went in search of enemies to level up on.

* * * * *

As it turned out, a Hunter and a Healer made a terrible two person party.

If Dare had been a melee class, especially a sturdy tank class, then being healed as he went toe to toe with an enemy would've allowed him and his healer to level more swiftly and efficiently. But he was a ranged damage dealer, who needed the enemy to stay far away and not interrupt his attempts to shoot it.

If he was getting hurt it meant he didn't have time to use his bow.
